With thirteen years' experience as a freelance development and copy editor for a wide range of UK and international publishers, I'm always ready to tackle new projects - and would love to be involved in yours.

Are you an educational or children's publisherI could take your project from brief to final proofs! I could author or develop inclusive and internationally sensitive resources, text and artwork, provide expertise in formal grammar and align products to curriculum-consistent comprehension levels.

Are you an independent author or academic writer? I could tidy your text, tighten your grammar or, for fiction, help to develop depth in your characters or plot.

Are you a business? I could produce or perfect your copy, design your promotional materials and draw out your USPs.

However you feel your project could be perfected, peruse the information below for a clearer picture of what I can offer you.

I look forward to hearing from you!

HANNAH

HIRST-DUNTON

Development Editing, Copy Editing
Artwork Development

I have extensive experience editing:

  • children's and adults' trade texts

  • literacy fiction and non-fiction

  • digital texts and activities

  • KS1 & KS2 teaching materials

  • academic journals, theses and books

I can also provide:

  • artwork briefing and development

  • page design

  • picture research

  • authoring of educational resources

  • content creation and copywriting

Much of my work has been with big-brand educational clients such as Pearson Education, Bloomsbury, Scholastic, HarperCollins, Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press, and levelled in line with UK and European national curricula. Consequently, I have an excellent sense of the literary and linguistic levels at which children enjoy reading, and have particular experience developing materials to engage struggling readers - for example comics and magazines, detailed supportive artwork and themes developed ahead of phonic or word-reading ability. This has been invaluable when developing both high-profile trade and independent authors' children's books.

The greatest part of my experience and passion lies in using artwork and layout to maximise the effect of children's fiction and non-fiction texts. I'm used to working in close liaison with illustrators and designers to create exceptionally high-quality and appealing books, whether they need to be whimsical, atmospheric, intricate, precise - or a combination!

I can also offer insight on literacy teaching. I've authored educational materials for resources as varied as online grammar activities, composition lesson plans and comprehension assessment guidance, and have supplemented both literacy and trade titles by developing learning points, fact files and quizzes that complement texts. I have complementary experience developing primary history, science and maths resources - all assisted by my rigorous formal grammar training, acute attention to detail and thorough understanding of children's literacy development goals.

In other sectors, I've written and designed promotional materials for a variety of businesses, from arts charities to tech
start-ups. I've also edited financial journals, scholarly editions and doctoral theses - and love to develop new skills in new fields.

Where desired, I can recommend and/or liaise with preferred partners to provide comprehensive services for project completion. These include trusted proofreaders, designers, and market or educational consultants.

Children's & Educational

"I have worked with Hannah for over 5 years on a variety of Primary Literacy projects on materials for teachers and students.

Hannah makes intelligent decisions and asks appropriate questions in a timely manner. Her editorial work is consistently of a very high quality, and she has a keen eye for grammar and accuracy. She is also able to work and manage her own schedules autonomously, liaising with in-house and freelance designers directly. Hannah's work on our Bug Club Planning Guides best exemplifies this. Hannah also has a creative talent for artwork briefing and reviewing highly-illustrated and highly-designed proofs. She has recently managed the entire editorial process for magazine-style readers for primary schools, adhering to a complex schedule and creating attractive and engaging content.

Hannah is incredibly reliable and trustworthy, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her."

James Clements

"We commissioned Hannah to produce a brochure for our flagship product. The service was very professional, responsive and courteous throughout, and the outcome was of a high standard. The attention to detail and keen eye for design impressed us, so much so that we then re-developed our website following the design. We would not hesitate to work with Hannah again."

Jochen Klingelhoefer

Executive VP Product, Labminds Ltd.

"Hannah's help in writing my PhD thesis was invaluable. She was wonderful at helping me make my points succinct and clear, and gave excellent suggestions on how I could present my ideas in a more compelling way.  Further, she helped check consistency across the whole thesis - not only of language but formatting, style, and notation. Having an extra pair of eyes to catch any problems not only increased my productivity but also improved the quality of the final document. It all paid off when I passed with (literally) no corrections from the examiners. Hiring Hannah is the smartest decision you'll make."

Dr John Menzies

We very much hope to work with her again in the not-too-distant future."
